For my outcome on'To love Veronica Bee'I will be doing a mannequin.
Ive decided to use the bad things that happen as a result of her parents marriage break down as my theme. For the back ground I will use zig zag bee stipes showing how hectic her life is getting then I will paint various words and pictures representing the types of things that are going bad eg;The olympic rings broken in half to represent her shattered dream of competeing in the olympics. Yet there will be some little things on the mannequin that show that even though there seems to be so much going on she still has hope eg; a pair of wings showing that even though things are going bad she can still reach for her dreams and fly.

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION of
TO LOVE VERONICA B – CHAPTER 11
With Illustrations/Narration/Background Music

The project itself was enjoyable but time consuming. I didn’t know how I could express such a drama novel in a happy and fun presentation. After reading the book a couple of times, I was able to think of a way of presenting it in a fun but challenging way on my behalf. I used the program Microsoft PowerPoint, so I can present the novel in a slide by slide presentation, like a picture book but with no text. However, I am going to now run down on the stages and problems I had faced throughout the project.

The first and hardest step of the project was to choose a design template for the presentation. It was difficult because I was running through the deign templates that PowerPoint had to offer, which was hard because there wasn’t any that caught my eye. However, when I picked up the novel, the front cover caught my eye and from their, I decided to use the colour scheme of the front cover, as a backing of the slides but in different patterns (Blue, Purple, Yellow). With the slide designs done, the title wasn’t difficult but something was missing. I looked for a picture of a cartoon bee (to fit the title). I found a bee, with letters in its hands, and I thought ‘Veronica had a letter in the book’, so I decided to use that on the front page (figure 1.1).

The next step was to go to the drawing board. The illustrations were hard to complete because I tried to perfect the drawings so it can capture the moment well. Since I am never happy with my own work, I ended up redrawing each of the illustrations roughly 10 times. Crazy I know, but they were the hardest part of the assignment because the details of the illustrations need to be representing the section of the book, with almost perfect accuracy. After doing the drawings, I then had to decide, whether they were going to be coloured or remain black and white. I decided to go with the black and white detail, because I felt it shows individuality, and originality, by actually doing it the way I see it fit best and also showing something that you wouldn’t normally see (black and white images).

The Music, easy to choose the songs, but complications rose. I was very happy with my music selection because not only did I have the music already on my personal hard drive, but I had songs that some how related to the book and the scenes that I represented in illustrations. These were the songs I had used:

Slide 1: Every time – Simple Plan (The day of the Move)
• I used this song because the song fitted quite well coincidentally.
• At the start of the song, it starts off with ‘it was 3am’ and the first few words of the chapter states ‘It was 9:56am’
• The song also talks about leaving and what they are leaving behind.
• Veronicas family is leaving Yarra Valley, so I felt that it sums up the scene quite well.

Slide 2: Faint – Linkin Park (instrumental)
• The song faint talks the fight to stop being ignored.
• In scene 2, Veronica’s father was yelling out to Penny asking for help and Penny was just ignoring him.

Slide 3: Tricky – RMDC
• Veronica’s father was loading the side table onto the van
• While doing so he had a hard time trying to keep it level and stop the drawers from falling.
• Hence, it was tricky.

Slide 4: Perfect – Simple Plan (accident)
• During this scene, Veronica’s father loses control of the table and falls to the ground followed by the table he was loading.
• The song Perfect talks about a son’s attempt to gain the pride of his father, even though throughout his life he could not be the perfect son. Throughout the song, the story tells of numerous apologies to his father about not being perfect.
• In this case, Veronica is apologising to her father, because she was supposed to help but she didn’t.

Slide 5: American Idiot – Greenday (After, the accident)
• Veronica and her mother uncover the severity of the cut
• Veronica’s mum gives her husband a lecture about loading the table on her own.
• I think, that Veronica’s father is thinking ‘what does she think I am, an idiot’.
• Hence, ‘American idiot ‘

Slide 6: O Fortuna – (the argument begins)
• Veronica’s mum and dad start arguing.
• By the sound of the start, it signals the start of something, like an event, phenomenon etc.

Slide 7: I don’t want to know – Mario Winan’s (husband is throwing napkins towards down the drive).
• It seems that the mother is upset in this scene.
• I think that she had ‘I don’t want to know’ running through her head, and all she wanted to do was ignore the hysteria.

Slide 8: Crawling – Linkin Park (the charge)
• Crawling is a retelling of teenager’s problem (s) that had affected her badly, with adrenalin running through her veins.
• In this scene, Richard (Veronica’s father) charges at Penny.
• He does this because he has had enough and is severely aggravated.

Slide 9: Figure 9 – Linkin Park (spills the beans)
• In this scene Penny Spills the beans about know dad’s secret.
• Penny also protests about her mother knowing about her father’s deceit and lies.
• Figure 9, is a song about how someone can leave such a footprint on someone’s heart and the bond between 2 people is ever lasting.

Slide 10: Worst day ever – Simple Plan (Cooling off)
• Everyone starts to cool off
• I believe that every member of ‘Bee’ family thought, ‘this is the worst day ever’ or something along the lines of having a bad day.

The problem I had however was copyright issues. I added the songs ignoring the fact that it may cause a copyright uproar, and continued the project. However, I have added the songs, only to present to the class, but for it to be presented outside the school the songs will be removed. I have attempted to contact ‘Warner Music’ but I didn't have the time or money to actually wait for a reply and pay for a license.
Along with the music, I narrated the chapter. It was hard because the sensitivity of the microphone was unbelievable. I used an ‘italk’ for the ipod, which is a voice recording attachment. It is difficulty to actually record my voice in different emotions because my voice is so mono tone, that its hard to deliberately change my voice.

Advantages:
• I had all the final software required for the project
• I was familiar with the software being used
• I had most of the equipment required

Disadvantages:
• Device glitches – mini disk recorder, never loaded on the computer
• I had to buy a voice recording attachment for my ipod ‘$70’
• Wasted 5 CDs (burnable) – due to software and burning glitches
• I can’t draw!

I really enjoyed working on this assignment, because it helped me improve presentation skills, and also computer skills.

Once again I changed my mind on what I want to do for this exercise, at the last minute this time. I am now doing a mannequin. I recently received my mannequin and went to work on it straight away. I marked out on the mannequin where I was going to cut it into pieces (I cut it into 5 pieces, 2 arms, 2 legs and the midsection). I went to my dads work and used the ban saw. I then made a board that I spray painted black and mounted the limbs to the board. I made a stand to sit the midsection on so it would look in proportion to the rest of the body. I drew pictures of horses, unicorns, the 4 leaf clover, Susie, the locket and the Olympic Games on it in pencil. I cut the body up to represent the change of life that veronica was experiencing and routine of day to day life was broken. I drew on the midsection all the things that meant something to her to show that even though her life was changing, she still was the same girl and still loved the same things and had the same dream.

Graeme and I are making a mannequin as a nun for “To Love Veronica Bee”.
Our idea came from the part in the book where Veronica leaves Yarra Valley High and attends a convent school in Kew where nuns run the school.

We are planning to paint the mannequin and add a cross and glasses to represent Sister Frances who is a specific teacher at the school who seems to help out Veronica with an IRP that she is currently working on.
Sister Frances notices that Veronica is wearing a chain with a pendant and she has to confiscate it from her because they are not allowed to wear jewelery at school. Veronica pleads for her not to take it but rules are rules. The reason why Veronica is so against Sister Frances taking her pendant is because it holds her lucky four leaf clover and the scrap of paper that is the letter her mum wrote to her promising that they will return to Yarra Valley in one year’s time.

Hi,

I’m a VCE student at Latrobe Secondary College and I have been working on a PowerPoint presentation which presents a chapter in the book ‘To Love Veronica Bee’. This Project will include Narration and Illustrations and background music.
I have chosen Chapter 11 which was when Veronica’s family were moving away from Yarra Valley. All the words have been narrated, featuring background music which some how relates to the individual scenes. The images were self illustrations by me, presented in Black and White.

Throughout this duration, I have had a lot of difficulty recording and uploading sounds into the Presentation, due to some devices having limitations. The illustrations however, look easy to do, but have taken the longest time, because I want to get it right, and capture the moment properly.
The Background music I have chosen has been written and produced by various artists, and caused problems in regards to the presentation. It has been quite difficult contacting the artists in regards to the project however; I have applied for a license with the production company. With all big companies come a cost and time consumption, so I decided to cancel the application, because I do not have the time or money to wait for a confirmation. The music however, will be used only to present to the class, but not a worldwide audience.

The Project is starting to take shape and is only days away from its completion.

I have had trouble with coming up with a way to present my piece. I had a couple of ideas on what I wanted to do, but I couldn’t really find one that works for me. But I have finally found one.
I am planning to make a model of Susie and Veronica accomplishing there dream and riding together in the Olympic Games. It will show the two girls on there horses riding along side each other approaching a jump, wearing the green and gold. Somehow, I will work in her chain and locket that contains the four leaf clover and the note that she tore up and put in her sock. I am hoping that it will turn our alright and that the oral presentation will go well.
I choose this because this is Veronica’s and Susie’s dream. Everyone has a dream that they want to achieve so I figured that I would choose the girls dream. This dream is mentioned throughout the book, by that mean all the way through, not in every chapter.

For the outcome on “To love veronica bee” Simone and I will be making a mannequin that will be made up of all the things close to veronica bee and her dreams in the inside of the mannequin because we want that to come across as really close to her heart and show what’s in the inside of her,
then on the outside it will have her horse riding outfit because she really loved to ride horses and she absolutely adored horses and collected horse things.

WHAT GOES ON THE INSIDE OF OUR MANNEQUIN?
So far we have decided that we want to draw on a picture of a horse, her with a horse and also the four leaf clover, some bees, a honey comb but also we want to also show that horse riding is her dream and kind of show her achieving her goal of being in the Olympics and have some ribbons and maybe a trophy, we are also going to have the letter that her mum wrote to her before she went to school in Kew because that was a significant thing in the book because its telling her that things will be alright even though she’s going to be away from home and also because she keeps a bit of the letter in which she ripped up on her necklace with her four leaf clover.

Veronica Bee

We are from La Trobe Secondary College and are reading Veronica Bee and for our piece we have chosen to do a mannequin and we are going to design it with a bee bottom and wings like a bee coming out and it will be painted with the clothes she is wearing on the front cover of the book and inside we have chosen to do a bibliography on her with the thing she enjoys. Inside there will be some 3D pieces and some just on a plain piece of paper. We choose to do a mannequin because Veronica is one of the main characters and we wanted to explore her and know the things she enjoys and likes.

Examples of some things that Veronica likes:
• Horses
• Yarra Valley
• Susie
• Four leaf clover
• Competition riding for Australia in the Olympics
• Country life
• Unicorns
• Helping people

I will be working on a mannequin for my outcome for the book “To Love Veronica Bee”.

My main idea is to paint the mannequin with black and yellow stripes first, to link her surname and nickname to the project. Then I’m going to paint various things on top of that like horses, four-leaf clovers, her house in Yarra Valley and what I think her best friend Suzie would look like. Then I’m going to put quotes from the book that show that she was happy.

I chose to do the mannequin this way as I wanted to show that things weren’t always bad for Veronica; that she still had Suze as her best friend despite the move to Kew, that she still had her lucky four-leaf clover and her dreams of competing in the Olympics, even though they seemed distant.

When the idea of creating a Hip Hop track with a well known American rap artist “Elf Transporter” came up in a La Trobe Secondary College English class, a group of boys jumped at the chance to become involved. The program, aptly titled, “Pop Fiction Youth e-Literature” is the brainchild of Author, Sarah Boland, and uses multimedia to make art that is related to her critically acclaimed book, “Veronica Bee”.

The students involved with the rap project have been bouncing ideas and lyrics off one another in readiness for their trip to the State Library’s recording studio. The student come from varying musical backgrounds, collaborating sound production specialists, musicians, lyrical skills and a whole lot of determination.

“The inspiration to make this song comes from many years of listening to rap tunes and looking up to some of the greatest rappers that have ever lived, like, Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, and Dr. Dre.”, States Steve Walker, one of the Students involved with the Rap project. “Its great to be given the chance to make our own music that will hopefully reach out to people the same way our rap heroes have done to us”.

For Veronica Bee we are making a movie trailer, alternate cover for the book and some wallpapers for the site. Outside of school we do video editing and banner making which is why we thought of doing these first off. We will be using Jacs Paintshop Pro 8 and 9 for the wallpapers and alternate cover and Sony Foundry Vegas Video 4 and 5 for the movie trailer.
Our plan for the movie is to show some scenes from the book that would make people come and watch a movie version of the book or read the book itself. The plan is to make it 30-60 seconds in length. We will need to make two versions of the trailer, one in high quality for the plasma screen in the State Library and one in low quality for the website. For the wallpapers we will take a theme from the book and convert them into visual art. The cover of the book will be our own ideas about the book put into a book cover.
It will be good to get a chance to do what we like doing outside of school in school. And be able to show our artistic talent.
