02/08/2005: "Introducing students from Latrobe Secondary College!!!"
In Term 1 2005, 180 students from Latrobe Secondary College are participating in the 2005 Pop Fiction Youth e-Literature Event. It’s unique that students from all year levels are participating, including WAVE, VCAL & Year 12’s!
Here's a class of Year 7's
I’m ‘writer in residence’ whilst students make Pop Fiction artwork and multimedia related to To love Veronica Bee. Creations are showcased in bumble.com.au’s Hive and Honey Pot plus students add comments right here in the Buzz Room. At the end of Term 1, students’ creations are exhibited at the State Library of Victoria (March 14th-24th).

So what’s happened so far and who have I met?
In the first week of Term students settled into class, organized text books, timetables etc. So Week 2 was when my residency started. When I drop into a class, first thing we did was chat about pop culture and find out what people are into, like “music and movies and stuff”. We watched the ‘Pop Fiction Multimedia Performance’ to learn about ‘what is Pop Fiction’ and see how other students make Pop Fiction. Then we brainstorm a list of all the different kinds of artforms to get us thinking about our Pop Fiction. I usually get asked heaps of questions like “how old are you?” That’s when I say “it’s my birthday on Thursday and if you buy me a big chocolate cake then I’ll tell you how old I am!”.
Today is Tuesday so it’s the middle of Week 2. I’m still yet to meet WAVE and VCAL students (some have run out of class to say hello or have waved from the other side of the classroom window. I’m looking forward to meeting these guys coz they look like they’re full of beans). The cool thing about Latrobe is that every class is sooooooo different. Some classes are playful and loud, some classes are conscientious and right into it and some are shy to begin with.
When I first met the Year 7’s they were so busy reading TLVB that they didn’t even notice that I’d joined their class. I noticed that they used Veronica Bee stickers as bookmarks.
Year 8's asked me to draw Veronica's house at Yarra Valley and Kew. I'm not a vey good drawer so they ended up drawning a picture on the whiteboard for me! This is Veronica's house at Yarra Valley:
And this is Veronica's new house at Kew:
Year 8's brainstormed a list of themes, issues and symbols. Check out: Year8'sThemesIssuesSymbols Plus Pip has made a 3D Model of a bushfire just like the Waring bushfire that happens in To love Veronica Bee!
The Year 9’s and VCAL are way ahead of schedule. They’re already making Pop Fiction rockart which totally caught me by surprise. If you click on ‘COMMENTS’ you can read what they have to say about what they’re making!!
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m totally looking forward to Elf Tranzporter coming to Latrobe to perform his hip hop!! He’s also gonna give students ideas for how they can write lyrics about TLVB and help students record a Pop Fiction hip hop album.
Wicked!
See ya,
Sare
