02/07/2005: "Introducing Pop Fiction’s Year 12 Media students from Essendon Keilor College!!!"

In Term 1 2005, three students from Essendon Keilor College are making Pop Fiction multimedia. First they read To love Veronica Bee, then make a short work of media about the book’s story and/or characters, themes, issues and symbols. Short works are approximately 2-3 minutes in length and creations can be in any artform, such as animation, film/vid, web page or whatever students come up with! Creations are then showcased at www.bumble.com.au and exhibited on the big screen at Experimedia (State Library of Victoria) March 14th-24th 2005.

cool eh?So, who are the media students?

Hi Melanie Root! It's Miss Mitchell. Nice to see you on this site - hope you're enjoying your new school. I've moved on too - OLMC, Heidelberg. Good luck with all your multimedia ventures. Still in the band too? See you!

Today we had a visit from Sarah Boland, the author of 'To Love Veronica Bee'. She explained to us about what she does in regards to her novel & the other schools she visits, as well as the variety of project ideas available to us when we begin to make & design our projects based on the novel which we've all read. I think I'm going to do a claymation in the style of a comedy, I'll probably include characters like the nuns of Lagilla, Penny (Veronica's older sister) & a couple others as they come to mind. I know I'll enjoy doing this project because it gives me the freedom of expressing my own ideas in my own way.
It's interesting to know that there are tons of other students are participating in this project & it'll be fun to see what others come up with.

At the launch of the book, 'To love Veronica Bee' I witnessed a documentry which helped me get a better insight of what Pop fiction was all about. Pop fiction is about taking ideas from a book and turning them into creative ideas such as animations, films, artwork and music. I thought that it looked very interesting and i liked watching the other examples that we were shown. I think that it is a good idea and helps you interact more with the book and get a better insight.
Today Sarah (author of the book 'To Love Veronica Bee'), came to our school and we discussed ideas that we have about what we would like to do to contribute. I decided that i like the idea of animation and would like to base my film on the characters of Penny or Cas. I really liked the character of Penny and how she was different to the others, and her age also appealed to me. I liked how Cas played guitar and was a very friendly character. I am looking forward to getting started on my animation and seeing the end result.
Sarah told us about the other schools that are involved and the artwork that they were contributing. I think that its a good idea how the artwork will be on the website www.bumble.com.au because it is helpful interaction for those who enjoy the book and it also helps you to appreciate the book on a different level.

hey, im danielle a.k.a elle, this is my first entry. Pop Fiction 2005 had its first launch in November 2004. I was fortunate enough to go along and have a look at what it's all about. Pop fiction has been inspired by the author of 'To Love Veronica Bee' Sarah Boland. When I was there I got to see all the artwork that had already been created by enthusiastic students of Princes Secondary. I also met the artist Chris he was really cool, who made an animation about singing and dancing rocks! Who'd have thought you could make an interesting visual out of rocks!? At the Launch there was a viewing of all the yr 7 students' artwork, I also got to see other animations that had been done specially for Pop Fiction.
Im not a big reader, it takes me a while to get into a book without having to read the first page at least 5 times!! However it only took me three days to read 'To Love Veronica Bee'! I literally couldnt put it down.. I loved it. My favourite character is Penny maybe because im close to her age and can relate to her and know what she is going through.. though i assure u im not that violent!!
I just started today coming up with ideas for my project to enter into the pop festival .. so far ive come up with clay as my medium and penny as my character, as you can see ive thought a lot about it!! By the next time i make an entry i should know where im heading in more depth.
Until then .... be good!! smile
